Each year, the Jackie Robinson Foundation offers scholarships for minority students who are seniors in high school. To date, they have funded over 65 million dollars in grants to eligible students. Students who have been awarded funding through the Foundation have attended over 200 different colleges and universities. For more than 40 years, the Jackie Robinson Foundation has attempted to close the achievement gap in minority students and prepare these students to be future leaders.
The Jackie Robinson scholarship is one of the few awards that aims to address the overall needs of aspiring student leaders. Thus, in addition to providing financial aid, students also receive guidance in order to help them graduate college. This special mentoring is provided through a curriculum called 42 Strategies for Success. The scholarship opens at the beginning of November each year and closes in mid-February. This is a national selection process that is competitive. If the student is selected, they receive a four-year grant that can be used at any college or university.
Awards are open to exceptional high school students who are in their senior year of high school. Other fellowships are also available for JFR Scholarships who wish to work or study abroad after graduation. The scholarship grants awards students with a maximum of $28,00 over a four-year period. This award can be earned in addition to any financial aid they receive from their college or university. Financial aid is also provided to the students so that they can attend an annual conference in New York City. Scholars have the opportunity to provide other regional events as they occur.
Many scholars are eager to obtain this scholarship due to the valuable career services that it affords. This includes hands-on mentoring which is provided to the student by JPF staff, community leaders, JFR alumni, and other individuals. Mentors are trained to provide both professional and every day life mentoring to students on a year-round basis. The program can also help students obtain internships and job placements. In addition, scholars have access to year-round online webinars as well as in person workshops to help increase life skills, improve study habits, strengthen character, and promote leadership. Other topics such as personal finance and public speaking are also offered.
All JRF Scholars are expected to be engaged in community service during their scholarship time. In order to be eligible for the award, students must show leadership potential, be a high school senior who has shown involvement in their community, show financial need, be a U.S. citizen who plans to attend an accredited college or university in the U.S., demonstrate financial need, be working towards their first college degree, and have at least a 1,000 on their SAT (or 21 or above on their ACT).
