Poetry Scholarships

Students from all walks of life wonder how to best fund their college education. Poetry students are in a unique situation, in that there are a number of scholarships for students studying English and foreign languages, and they may be eligible for those. However, they may not know that there are also a number of poetry specific awards that are geared just towards students who write poetry. Below is a list of poetry scholarships that might be worth exploring:

Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry

Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Fellowships: This scholarship provides a whooping $25,800 to winners. It is funded through the Poetry Foundation. In order to be eligible, students must be between the ages of 21-31 years old, be a citizen of the United States, and complete an application prior to the April 30th deadline. In order to apply, students must include a number of writing samples, a brief essay, and a list of their previous publications. Poetry Out Loud Scholarships

Poetry Out Loud Scholarships: This scholarship is available for students who prefer to recite their poetry orally. This award provides up to $20,000 in scholarship funding and enables students to gain national exposure for their talents. In order to be eligible, students must be residents of the United States. Any high school student is eligible to apply. Students must first enter into local or school competitions and then proceed to a state level. The top winners of the state level competition will proceed to a national competition. Coe College Writing Scholarships

Coe College Writing Scholarships: These awards are open to students who write poetry, as well as students who write other genres. Students must apply for admission and apply for the scholarship separately. In order to apply, the student will need two writing samples and a couple pages about themselves as a writer. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards: This organization provides up to $10,000 in scholarships for high school seniors. Students are able to submit either one individual poem or a collection of poems in order to be considered for the scholarship. Michigan State University’s Ambrose D. Patullo Scholarships: This award is open to MSU students who are majoring in English. Students must have demonstrated an interest in poetry and they are required to submit samples of their work. The scholarship is worth $1,000. Students who plan a career in teaching poetry are given highest priority.


“Just Poetry!!!” Scholarships: This program provides scholarships to high school students who write poetry. The awards range in value from $100 to $500. Additional information about the application process can be found here: http://justpoetry.org/scholarships.
