Susan Buffett Scholarships

The Susan Thompson Buffet Foundation was established more than 50 years ago. Since that time, the foundation has been offering scholarships to students who are residents of Nebraska in order to make college more affordable. These scholarships are only awarded to the top applicants, given the high demand and limited funding.

In order to be considered for the scholarships offered through The Susan T. Buffett Foundation, students are required to meet a number of different eligibility criteria. First, all applicants must have either earned a GED in Nebraska or graduated from a high school that is located within the State of Nebraska. In addition, each applicant must hold at least a 2.5 grade point average from their high school career. Only students who are residents of Nebraska will be considered for this scholarship. Furthermore, all applicants are required to demonstrate a high level of financial need and plan on attending college as a first-time freshman. Only applicants who plan to attend a college or university within the state (Nebraska State College System, University of Nebraska, or Nebraska Community Colleges) will be considered for this award. Full information about eligibility criteria can be found at this website.

The application cycle opens around November 1st of each year. In order to apply for this scholarship, students must submit two letters of recommendation, a transcript from their high school, online scholarship application forms, and a FAFSA application. In addition, each applicant is required to write on essay, which is about 2-3 pages in length, in which they discuss their responses to seven different questions. A full list of the questions that applicant’s must write about can be found at this link. Each applicant will receive a notification about their application by May 1st.

Given the high demand for this scholarship, a selection committee reviews all applicants based of four main criteria. The first is the academic merit of the applicant, which includes factors such as grade point average and scholastic achievements. The second factor is the quality of the applicant’s letters of recommendation. Thus, it is highly recommended that students obtain letters from recommenders who know them well. Thirdly, students are considered on the basis of financial need. While students do not have to meet Pell Grant eligibility criteria, they should be able to clearly demonstrate that they have a high level of financial need in order to attend the college. As such, students should have an Expected Family Contribution of $10,000 or less according to their FAFSA responses. Lastly, students are evaluated based on their personal essays.

The amount of the scholarship varies depending on the college the recipient plans to enroll in as well as the number od credits the student will be taking. Students can use the scholarship to cover the cost of housing, tuition, books, and student fees. The scholarship is renewable for three to five years, depending on whether the student attends a junior college or four-year institution. Additional information can be found at this website.
