The American Fire Sprinkler Association Scholarships

The American Fire Sprinkler Association created two different college scholarship contests that are open to the public. The goal of these scholarships is to educate the general public about how fire sprinklers can save many lives. A brief description about both contests can be found below, but applicants can find full information regarding both of these contests at this website.

$20,000 High School Senior College Scholarship Contest: This scholarship is open exclusively to students who will be seniors in high school during the 2016-2017 academic year. All students who are interested in applying must plan to pursue a higher education at a trade school or a traditional college or university. Through this program, a total of $20,000 is given away to the public. The scholarships are awarded to ten individuals, in increments of $2,000 each. The application cycle is open from September 7th, 2016 through April 7th, 2017.

In order to be eligible, students must be a high school senior and a legal resident of the United States. Additionally, students cannot be a relative of any AFSA employee. The scholarships will be awarded directly to the college or university that the student plans to attend and no money will be given directly to the applicant. The scholarships are not awarded based on high grade point average or financial need. Winners are selected at random from a computer-generated drawing. Thus, everyone has an equal chance of winning some free money!

Full information about how to apply for this scholarship can be found here. Students must enter online (no paper applications are accepted). Students may only enter one time. Students are required to complete all required information on the application form. Students who are the selected winners will be required to send in their contact information and school name within two months of notification.

$5,000 Second Chance Scholarship: This scholarship is open to students who have already graduated from high school. In order to be considered for this scholarship, students must be residents or citizens of the United States. The applicant may not be a relative of an AFSA member and must not have won a scholarship from AFSA in the past. The scholarship is given to five winners in the amount of $1,000. These are one-time scholarships and are not renewable. Students are chosen for these awards based solely on luck (by a randomly generated computer algorithm) and as such, students are not required to have a minimum grade point average or show financial neediness in order to enter.

In order to apply, students should first read the official rules, which can be found here. Next, the applicant is required to complete an application form. All applications must be received between April 22, 2016 and August 29, 2016, which is considered the open cycle. The names of previous winners can be found at this website for both of the scholarship contests. The application process is very brief and as such, all students who are eligible are encouraged to apply.
