Washington State Scholarships

Students who have ties to Washington State have plenty of scholarships that they may want to consider. Some of these scholarships are reserved for residents of Washington State while others are open to students from anywhere who intend to matriculate in a university in Washington State.

There are a number of way that Washington students can find these scholarships. The first is to complete a FAFSA application. This will enable students to receive a notification if they qualify for any state level funding. After that step, students should check with individual colleges and universities in Washington State to see whether they have awards. For example, Washington State University maintains one website of scholarships for Washington residents (https://admission.wsu.edu/scholarships/washington-residents/how-to-apply/) and another website for non-Washington residents (https://admission.wsu.edu/scholarships/non-washington-residents/how-to-apply/). Check out the list below for some scholarships that are only open to students with Washington ties:

 Washington State Scholarship Foundation

Washington State Scholarship Foundation: This award is open to students who have graduated from a Washington State high school. In order to be eligible, students must have a diploma from either a private or public high school (or have a GED from Washington), demonstrate financial need, and be entering the university as a first time freshmen. The funding may be used for students to attend a variety of different institutions, such as vocational schools, trade schools, junior college, or a traditional four-year college. This award provides students who are attending a four-year institution with a scholarship worth $5,000. Additional scholarships, each worth $2,500, are available to students attending institutions for less than four years. Washington State Opportunity Scholarship: This award is open to Washington residents who are from low- or middle-income backgrounds. In order to be eligible, students are required to graduate from a high school within the state of Washington, pursue one of several high-demand majors (i.e., health care, science, technology, math, or engineering). Applicants must plan to enroll as a full-time student at state university and must be working towards their first degree. Only students who have at least a 2.75 grade point average will be considered. In order to apply, students must complete an online application by January 4th. Furthermore, they must complete the FAFSA by early March and mail a transcript from their high school.  Washington State College Bound Scholarship

Washington State College Bound Scholarship: This award is open to students in 7th and 8th grade who come from low-income backgrounds. Students must agree to finish high school and subsequently enroll in college. The award is also open to students who are in foster care or who are a ward of the state. Students are required to hold at least a 2.0 grade point average, complete the FAFSA during their high school year, and/or meet income requirements.
